Troubles in South Africa

Many of our Fellows have been asking about the situation in South Africa and how our Fellows in Cape Town are faring. While there have been wide spread rioting and chaos in several areas, Cape Town has fared much better than other parts of the country.

In a recent conversation with our Cape Town chapter head Arno Forster, he stated that they have not experienced any of the violence and unruliness that other cities have and that generally, the member base in Cape Town is doing well.

We are happy to hear this and look forward to having our South African Fellows joining us on future expeditions soon.

We will follow up on this news after our annual chapter council meeting when we will have the opportunity to debrief in greater detail.

Higher Tides over next few years

Higher tides over the next few years

Something to be aware of for upcoming expeditions, especially those on or near the oceans, is the higher tides we will be experiencing due to the Major Lunar Standstill effect from the Moon’s 18.6 year cycle which reaches its peak effect in 2024.

We will be monitoring expeditions planned closely to ensure all safety precautions are taken and that expedition leaders are well aware of the potential risks involved.

For more information on this cyclical process please see the following scholarly works: The 18.6-year Lunar nodal cycle – Journal of Geophysical Research: Oceans

Site Functionality

Several areas of the site are not yet fully functional as we are still in the middle of our site modernization project.

It will take some time to get all the information converted over to the new back end and have all the areas of the site fully functioning again.

Core areas are up and running including:

    • Home page
    • Chapters  – overview
    • History – all three subsections
    • Shop – framework in place but store items not yet populated
    • Contact us

Remaining areas to restore:

    • Chapter specific details and member pages
    • Expedition video logs (huge amount of data to move over)
    • Shop items

Please contact the site admin if any issues accessing the site are discovered where functionality should be in place.
